Growing up I had nearly every type of animal around, dogs, cats, horses, birds, hamsters, ducks, guinea pigs, ferrets, etc. It was the companionships of these animals that led to my present great love of animals. Today I have three lab mix dogs (Jake, Blue, and Lucky), one very naughty cat (Harley), and one white dove (Phoebe). The first dog that I adopted when I was on my own was Jake. Jake is an extremely intelligent dog. Being so intelligent, he gets bored easily and I needed to find a way to exercise his brain. I found that I could do this through positive motivation based dog training. The dogs that I adopted after Jake where all trained in the same methods. Training my own dogs led me into teaching dog training classes, which I have done for a number of years now. My favorite part of teaching classes is not necessarily seeing the best behaved dog, it’s seeing the moment when a dog and his owner have been working on something for a while and it finally “clicks” for both the dog and his owner.

In addition to training dogs, I am also active in an organization called Labrador Education and Rescue Network. We foster homeless Labradors and Lab mixes in Illinois and Wisconsin until permanent homes can be found for these dogs. This volunteer work is extremely rewarding for me, as I get to see dogs go from being homeless to becoming part of a family.
