Q: What is your favorite part of daycare?

A: Giving snuggles and belly rubs!

Q: What is your favorite part of training?

A:  It encourages dogs and humans to work together as a team. I also love how happy and proud the dogs look when their people praise them.

Q: Favorite thing about your team?

Q: Favorite thing about the clients?

A: They are so considerate! I also enjoy the funny conversations they have with their pups.

Q: Favorite thing about the dogs?

A: How they can surprise me. Some of the dogs who challenged me when I first met them have since become my favorite ones to work with. I love building a bond with each dog, learning what makes him or her unique, and earning his or her trust. It takes patience, but every little victory is so dear to me.

Q: Something unique about you – not related to the dogs

A: I play violin occasionally in my free time. I also sing in the car. A lot.

Q: Something you’d never guess I’d do/peg me for

You are extremely social and gregarious and you love to swim and to run with your friends. You love to work hard at your job, and nothing makes you happier than a good snuggle with your boo.

Q: Which breed did you grow up with?

A: A cairn terrier named Toto

Q: Tell us about the pets that you live with now?

A: My dog Rocky recently passed away so I don’t live with any pets right now. She was a tiny Chihuahua who was very sassy, but also very sweet.

Q: Favorite color

A:  Turquoise

2020 Staff Spotlight: Lin

Name:  Lin
Primary Location:  East

Q: When did you start?

A: April 2019

Q: What made you apply for this this job?

A: When I applied at the Dog Den, I had recently dropped out of business school and was just looking for something that I would be happy doing – and boy, did I find it! I have always wanted to work with animals, and I fell in love with the dogs and the atmosphere immediately.

Q: What is your favorite part of daycare?

A: I love how excited the dogs get to see us and all their friends, and I always look forward to dressing them up and taking holiday photos!

Q: What is your favorite part of training?

A:  Watching the bond grow between the dogs and their humans as they learn to understand and communicate better with one another is something really special.

Q: Favorite thing about your team?

A: We come from such different backgrounds and areas of expertise, but we all ended up here because of our passion for dogs!

Q: Favorite thing about the clients?

A: I love how open and willing they are to share their dogs’ lives with us, and all the funny stories that they share!

Q: Favorite thing about the dogs?

A: They never fail to put a smile on my face – whether it’s an enthusiastic hello, a flirtationship between friends, or trying to climb into my skin for snuggles, it’s impossible to have a bad day with these dogs.

Q: Something unique about you – not related to the dogs

A: I am a drag performer! Performing, hosting, and competing in drag has been such a fun way to explore my gender identity and expression, and I was even interviewed in Teen Vogue about it!

Q: Something you’d never guess I’d do/peg me for

A: I spin fire – contact staff and hoop!

Q: Which dog breed are you based on this quiz:

https://play.howstuffworks.com/quiz/what-dog-breed-are-you?utm_source=share-copy&utm_medium=referral

A: Labrador – “You are a strong, fierce, intelligent person with a strong playful streak. You can be naughty and rambunctious, but your loyalty is until death. You are extremely social and gregarious and you love to swim and to run with your friends. You love to work hard at your job, and nothing makes you happier than a good snuggle with your boo.”

Q: Which breed did you grow up with?

A: We always had rescue dogs growing up, including a beagle and a few shepherd mixes. My favorite dog that I had growing up, Chewy, looked almost exactly like my boy now!

Q: Tell us about the pets that you live with now?

A: I have two dogs, both German Shepherd mixes. Zoey is five years old and is on the shyer side, but once she warms up, she is the sweetest, quirkiest dog you’ll meet. The only thing she loves more than snuggling into you is stealing your spot, but she can always be bribed with a piece of food! My other dog, Beau, is a year and a half, happy-go-lucky, pile of fluff that wants to be friends with every person and dog that he meets. He and Zoey have been inseparable since the day we brought him home, and are the best of friends. I also have a corn snake named Kenny, and a crested gecko named Lenny!

Q: Favorite color

 A: Matte black everything

Q; If you could have one super power, what would it be?

A: The power to change probability – I could change the weather, odds I’ll win the lottery, anything!

Q: What weird collections do you have?

A: According to my roommates (and kitchen cabinets), I have too many water bottles…

Q: If you could pull one thing out of your belly button for the rest of your life, what would it be?

2020 Staff Spotlight: Haven

Name: Haven
Primary Location: Mix between Puppy & Fitchburg

Q: When did you start?

A: February of 2020

Q: What made you apply for this this job?

A: I was about to graduate UW-Madison with a B.S. in animal sciences and wanted to find a job that I could learn from and grow in (that was also involved animals).

Q: What is your favorite part of daycare?

A:  I love the bond you create with each and every dog you come in contact with. Being able to go to work and have the dogs be excited to see you is the best feeling!

Q: What is your favorite part of training?

A: Being able to see the “light bulb” moment that both dogs and owners have is really special.

Q: Favorite thing about your team?

A: The HUGE amount of knowledge that the team brings to the table. I am constantly learning something new from every single one of my team members.

Q: Favorite thing about the clients?

A:  The love and devotion they show for their dogs!

Q: Favorite thing about the dogs?

A: That they are always excited to be at daycare and learning new things!

Q: Something unique about you – not related to the dogs

A: Something unique about me is that I work part time as a zookeeper. This was the first step I took into a career focused more on animal behavior rather than animal health/medicine, and it so fun to see how training exotic animals can be so similar to training dogs.

Q: Something you’d never guess I’d do/peg me for

A:  Something most people wouldn’t peg me to do is sing. I was raised in a musical family so early on I fell in love. I am classically trained, participated in competitive show choir and even was a part of a competitive collegiate a cappella group where I not only sang, but arranged music and gave musical direction to the group!

Q: Which dog breed are you based on this quiz:

https://play.howstuffworks.com/quiz/what-dog-breed-are-you?utm_source=share-copy&utm_medium=referral

A:  Although I don’t totally agree, I am a French bulldog.

“You are a French bulldog. You don’t like to work very hard, you’re not particularly sociable, and you have a beautiful mind that you don’t especially like to use because mental and physical exercise aren’t exciting to you. Instead, you use your smarts to get away with not pulling your weight, and you’re so darn cute that no one minds.”

Q: Which breed did you grow up with?

A:  When I was a baby, my parents had a Great Dane mix and throughout middle and high school we had rat terriers, a pit bull, a German shepherd and boxers.

Q: Tell us about the pets that you live with now?

A:  Currently, I have a 4 month old Pembroke Welsh Corgi puppy named Mesa and three fancy rats named Freddie Mercury, Grey and Goose.

Q: If you got stranded on an island & it’s just you and your best buddy dog, what other animal would you want with you and why?

Q: If you were a candle, what scent would you be?

A: Spiced Apple because it is a pleasant mix of sweet and spicy

Q: What weird collections do you have?

A:  I have a collection of flat stones that I collected  from Madeline Island!

2020 Staff Spotlight: Steph

Name:  Steph
Primary Location:  Mostly Puppy with a sprinkle of adult from time to time

Meet Steph

Q: When did you start?

A: April 2014

Q: What made you apply for this this job?

A:  Good Question. I started at The Dog Den as a client with my brand new Great Dane puppy, Bane. I took one puppy class with Daniela and decided that is what I needed to be doing with my life. I had just completed a masters degree in Project Management, yet followed my heart to dogs and have NEVER  looked back ((or been happier!))

Q: What is your favorite part of daycare?

A: There are quite a few so picking just one is hard. Here are my top 3:

1. Seeing puppies that start at The Puppy Den grow up and join us in The Dog Den.

2. Helping shy puppies “find their brave” when they first start daycare

3. Forming relationships with the dog and puppy guardians and laughing, joking, and experiencing their dog or puppy right along with them.

Q: What is your favorite part of training?

A:  Again..picking just one is impossible so here again are my top 3:

1.  PUPPIES!  I love love helping pet guardians get their little one off to a great start

2. Seeing the progression from week 1 of class to the last week of class and seeing the smiles and genuine joy families have when training with there dogs or puppies.

3.  Learning all kinds of new things to apply to our classes to stay on the cutting edge of positive reinforcement pet training

Q: Favorite thing about your team?

A: My favorite thing about my team is how genuinely caring everyone is. Every single person on this team has the BIGGEST heart I have ever experienced. All of that all in one place is a whole lot of caring and smiles.

Q: Favorite thing about the clients?

A: My favorite thing about all of the clients is watching them interact with their dogs and puppies when they think no one is watching (both in class and in daycare). The cute “how was your day Fluffy” as you leave daycare or “WOOHOO You did it—high five” when they nail a trick in class will ALWAYS bring me joy.

Q: Favorite thing about the dogs?

A: My favorite thing about the dogs and puppies is watching them learn. Whether it is learning to recall out of play with your very best friend or keep 4 on the floor while getting snuggles I LOVE celebrating those “YES!” moments.

Q: Something unique about you – not related to the dogs

A: I’m an introvert (yep —you read that right) who expresses herself through a full-sleeve tattoo and colored hair. Oh, and squeaky puppy voices 😉

Q: Something you’d never guess I’d do/peg me for

A: Have a side hustle in photography. I have had a TERRIBLE memory most of my life and started taking lots of pictures early so I can remember things. The more pictures I took the better I got at it 🙂

Q: Which dog breed are you based on this quiz:

https://play.howstuffworks.com/quiz/what-dog-breed-are-you?utm_source=share-copy&utm_medium=referral

A: Greyhound…which is interesting. I pictured myself as more of a German Shepherd

Q: Which breed did you grow up with?

A: Black lab mixes

Q: Tell us about the pets that you live with now?

A: Happily! I have 4 dogs right now:

Bella, a beagle/corgi mix who is going to be 10 in march

Avi, a hound dog mix who is going to be 9 in November

Bane, Great Dane #1 (and the one that brought me to The Dog Den) who just turned 7!

Bruce(y) Wayne, Great Dane #2 who will be 6 in January

Q: Favorite color

A:  You aren’t even ready for this excitement: G…R…E…Y. Is that really a color though? If it doesn’t count, purple is a close second.

Q: Share a boring fact about yourself

A:  I don’t even care which way you put the toilet paper on the holder *gasp*

Q: If you got stranded on an island & it’s just you and your best buddy dog, what other animal would you want with you and why?

A: Definitely NOT snakes and DEFINITELY something that is a BABY ONE because hello cuteness!  Probably a penguin..or an elephant. Both bring equal amounts of squeals

Q: If you were a candle, what scent would you be?

A: Bourbon Maple from Bath and Body Works. It smells like fall mixed with winter in a jar <3

Q; If you could have one super power, what would it be?

A: Isn’t it obvious—converse with doggos. I want to know what they are actually thinking when I narrate for them —or do I?

Q: What weird collections do you have?

A: This might qualify as the “things to know about me” section, but I am not a collector or the type that holds on to things. In fact, if I haven’t used it in the last 4 hours —get rid of it (joking…but only kind of) so I don’t have any weird collections.

Q: If you could pull one thing out of your belly button for the rest of your life, what would it be?

A: Shoes. I LOVE SHOES.
